Chapter 559
Too Late, Mr. Billionaire: You can’t afford me now
Chapter 559:
Once her initial surprise faded, a strange twinge of hurt welled up inside her, something she couldnât quite name.
âEric.â Lindaâs voice slipped into a soft laugh. âAre you actually in love with Hadley?â
Love?
For a moment, Eric looked as though heâd been struck.
What was love? It was a word too heavy to toss around casually. Rather than answering directly, he sidestepped. âHadleyâs my girlfriend. Of course Iâd make allowances for her.â
He really said that?
The corners of Lindaâs mouth lifted into a taut, chilly smile. He seemed to have forgotten that Hadley was once his wifeâsomeone he certainly hadnât cared for this much back then.
Heâd changed.
Suddenly, Linda felt a pang of regretâmaybe urging Eric and Hadley to stay together in order to keep Ernest close hadnât been such a good plan after all.
Eric barely managed to rest that night.
He rose early and wandered downstairs, only to find Linda awake even sooner.
âEric, youâre up?â Linda called from the kitchen, giving him a warm wave. âCome sit downâcoffeeâs ready.â
He pulled out a chair at the table, and Linda came over with a steaming mug. âHave some coffee first. Iâm making breakfast. Toast with butter, eggs, and bacon⦠You still like them, donât you? Itâs been ages since I last made any for you.â
âYouâre making breakfast?â Eric echoed, setting aside the coffee heâd just lifted to his lips. âWhat time did you get up?â

âI couldnât really sleep,â Linda said, offering a wry smile. âI saw we had everything we needed in the fridge, so I decided to make us breakfast.â
Eric nodded. âWith Hadley staying here, itâs simpler to cook at home.â Normally, heâd just eat out when he was by himself.
At those words, Lindaâs smile tightened ever so slightly.
Linda let out a gentle sigh. âYouâre so considerate toward Hadley⦠Ernest never bothered with the little things like that for me.â She had spent so many years by Ernestâs side. True, he was accommodatingâbut only if she voiced her needs.
When she looked back on it, he almost never took the initiative to anticipate what she might want.
Eric noticed the sadness in Lindaâs eyes. âDonât dwell on it. Your situation with Ernest is different. Arenât you in charge of the Flynn familyâs finances?â
Eric believed that because she held the purse strings, she rarely had to go through Ernest to get what she needed.
âNoâ¦â Linda shook her head, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. âItâs not about money. Itâs about the gestureâshowing me that he cares. Sometimes⦠I donât think Ernest worries about me nearly as much as you do.â
The conversation veered into dangerous territory.
âLinda!â Eric interjected, a furrow forming on his brow. âYouâre overthinking things. You know Ernestâonce he makes a promise, he always follows through. And he made a promise to you, didnât he?â
âYeahâ¦â Linda nodded, though her agreement felt hollow.
âTry not to worry,â Eric continued, assuming his words had set her mind at rest. âErnest would never betray you.â
