Chapter 140
Hitched & Hitched Again: A Comedy of Marital Mayhem ( Elysia and Tarquin)
Elysia couldnât just walk away from her marriage â without a divorce, the kids couldnât be registered under her name. Without that, everything would be a hassle.
School, health insurance, you name it â all required proper documentation.
âLook, if youâre hitting any rough patches these days, just holler at me. I might not be king of the hill, but after all my years in Jindale City, Iâve got a few tricks up my sleeve to lend a hand.
And donât you play the stranger with me. Weâre not just old school pals; given your bond with Winona, I canât very well leave you in the lurch. Sheâd have my hide if she found out,â Zane assured her with a friendly nudge.
Elysia offered a polite smile in response, âThanks.â
That smile, however, didnât go unnoticed by Tarquin.
After settling things with Elijah, he called the butler, Heath, over; he had to dash off to the office.
He happened to pass by the hospital entrance just then.
The traffic light ahead was red, over 40 seconds left.
Tarquin peered through the car window at the two figures chatting amiably at the entrance and snorted.
Lowell, behind the wheel, followed Tarquinâs gaze and spotted Zane and Elysia.
âWhyâs Ms. Thomne at the hospital again?â he asked.
Tarquinâs voice dripped with scom, âBlind, are we? Canât you see sheâs here to see someone? Didnât they say she and Zane were just friends?â
âThe talk around town is just that. Zaneâs her senior and sonâinâlaw to the Newsom family. His wifeâs their only daughter, Winona, and sheâs best friend with Ms. Thorne. So naturally, Elysia and Zane are tight,â Lowell explained.
Elysia, âBest friend, indeed,â Tarquin mocked, as though suggesting Elysia was cozying up to Zane behind Winonaâs back.
Lowell failed to sense any romance in the air, âTheyâre friends, after all. Whatâs the harm in meeting up privately? If Winona were in Jindale City, itâd probably be a threesome.â
Tarquin shot back, âNo sense of decency, some folks. Never changes.â
Lowell was puzzled, âWhatâs got you so riled up about Ms. Thorne? You seem to have it out for her. Is it because she kissed you?â
That remark only fanned the flames. Tarquin bristled, feeling⦠violated, in a sense!
As Lowell went on, âI mean, you didnât lose out when Ms. Thorne kissed you. After all, youâre a man, and sheâs a woman.â
Tarquin grabbed a newspaper and smacked it against Lowellâs head, âFeeling too cocky these days?
Fancy a stint out in the border town?â
Lowell felt a chill down his spine and quickly recanted, âIgnore me. I take it back.â
Whoâd want to go to a border town, facing nothing but rubble all day?
Just look at Charlie. Six months there and heâs as dark as night, looking like a refugee. Heâd be lucky to find a wife when heâs back!
Tarquin gave Lowell a cold look, then turned back to look for Elysia. But she was no longer in sight at the hospital entrance.
âKeep tabs on her!â
âOh, and I heard that Ms. Thorne suggested getting a cat for Corbin. Mrs. Denton obliged, and the kidâs over the moon. Maybe we should get Elijah a cat too, cheer him up?â
âElijah doesnât like cats!â
âSeems like Elijah isnât a fan of Ms. Thorne either.â
Tarquin frowned, considering how much Corbin adored Elysia, heâd assumed Elijah would feel the same.
But apparently notâ¦
Lowell sheepishly added, âYou made Ms. Thorne cry today. Think sheâd still be up for looking after Elijah?â
Tarquinâs displeasure was palpable, âWhether sheâs willing is irrelevant. She doesnât call the shots!â
âWhether Lowell tried a different angle, âSo, do we still want Ms. Thorne to come over tomorrow?â
Tarquin didnât immediately respond. He hadnât quite figured it out yet.
