Remy wanted all the protection he could get for his mate and daughter. If that meant becoming alpha, he'd do it.
Maddox nodded, before hiding his snout with his black paws. Remy smiled softly and gently rubbed the spot between his ears.
After standing back up, Remy shared a look with Genevieve. She nodded and smiled, as if understanding what Remy had wanted to express. "It's okay."
Remy leaned down and pecked her lips quickly.
My beautiful luna mate.
...
Remy walked down the wooden steps, his footfall silent on the porch steps. The family house behind him was in the process of burning to the forest ground, black smoke rising to the early morning sky. The heat of the flames felt extremely hot against Remy's cold skin. He walked to the parked SUV that was nicely hidden within the large trees, getting in and watching the house from his window.
The last three hours had had Remy on edge, his beast rising to the occasion of settling an unfair fight. Sixty-four members of the Shadow Steele pack had made it out of that torture house. Remy was happy with the outcome of the situation, expecting way worse. The pack had lost three members, but those three had already lost their lives the night before.
Harvey and King had been the ones to assist Remy in the act of getting the injured pack members in vehicles and the healthy ones on their way to Remy and Gen's house. After Remy had been sure that all the werewolves were in safety, he calmly walked back into the house and down into the dark basement where he had distracted the dark fairy with salt. Surrounding a fae with salt was an old trick but nonetheless it had worked.
The fae had been more than surprised when Remy stormed into the house. Her first reaction was to aim at Remy with potions filled with Wolfsbane, yet the hybrid had expected that, dodging the fluid with inhuman speed. Surrounding her with salt was the next step. The ultimate distraction for fae's was salt or sugar. By pouring salt or sugar on the floor in front of a fairy, no matter how strong they are, must get down and count each grain until done. The rest of the work was done with a match and gasoline.
The trick with the salt and sugar was something Remy had learned from Caroline. Speaking of Caroline, she was quick to share her opinion with Remy on the whole situation as always. Caroline didn't think becoming an alpha was what her son needed at the time. If it was up to her, Remy should focus all his attention on his family, especially with his first child being born within the next month. Being alpha for a pack Remy barely knew wasn't the smartest thing for him. It was more than just responsibility, it involved caring for each member, knowing each member on a personal level, providing them with what they needed to survive, training the fighters etc. That was more than Remy could handle at the moment.
If he wanted safety for his family, then joining the pack was a great idea ... but not as their alpha.
Remy listened to her whole statement but in the end it was his choice. As he had listened to Caroline once again share her opinion on Remy's life decisions, he had wondered if every mother pried into their children's personal lives. Remy had hoped that Genevieve would naturally be interested in their daughter's life but only to some extent. He didn't want their daughter to feel like she had to lock her bedroom door, scared that they'd go searching through her stuff or that they were constantly suffocating her in her own personal space. Remy didn't want their baby girl to think that they were overbearing or controlling.
..
"Everything went as planned." Remy told Genevieve over the phone, as he sat in the car.
"I'm glad everything went as you planned." Gen replied, her happiness detectable. "The pack members are filling up our backyard. I think some of them are still clueless as to why they are at our house."
Remy chuckled. "Tell Harvey or King to inform them on the situation and I'll be on my way."
"Hold on, babe." Remy could hear Genevieve talking softly to someone in the background.
"Sorry about that. So I'll tell the boys and you'll be here soon?"
"Yes." Remy confirmed. "Who were you just talking to?"
"Maddox asked when are you coming. He's scared to go look if his nana is in the backyard."
"Give him the phone real quick." Remy said, eyeing the burnt down house from his car window.
"R-remy?" Maddox's voice was quiet and shaky.
"Yeah, it's me. I'm on my way now and then we'll go look for your nana together, okay?"
"Okay ..." The four year old pup agreed.
Remy could hear shuffling around before Genevieve was back on the line.
"Baby, I have to go pick something up and then I'll be on the road again." Remy informed his mate, while starting the car up.
"Alright." Genevieve spoke softly, probably blushing at the endearment. "Love you."
Remy smiled, although no one was there to see it. "I love the both of you too."
Remy ended the call and drove nearly half an hour into town, parking at the expensive jewelry story.
A week ago, Remy had ordered detailed jewelry with a high count of carats and now he needed to pick it up. With confident strides Remy walked up to the building, and pushed the door, making the bell above jingle. He gave a closed-mouthed smile to the old man, while walking up to the unoccupied counter.
"Good Morning Mr. Monroe." The bald man greeted Remy, with a overly friendly smile on his wrinkly face. "Here to pick up your order?"
Remy pulled out his wallet while nodding.
"You can take a look at your purchase first and then I'll pack it up for you." The jeweler said, before walking to the back of the shop.
Remy tapped his fingers on the glass display, glancing at all the different engagement rings. They varied in design and size.
When Remy heard the man coming back, he pulled out the cash from his wallet. The old man placed the red Cartier jewelry bag on the counter as he pulled out the matching jewelry box.
Remy's phone began to vibrate within his jeans pocket. He stuffed a hand in his pocket and pulled out his phone, answering the call as he watched the jeweler open the box.
"It's Genevieve. She fainted outside." Harvey rambled as soon as Remy picked up.
"I'm on my way." Remy replied equally as fast, his heart lurching in his chest.
Remy threw the wad of cash on the counter, informing the jeweler that everything looked perfect and that he had to go. Snatching the jewelry box with the baby bracelet in it and the matching jewelry bag, he jogged out the building. Remy sped down the streets of Wailea, luckily not encountering any cops on the way. He had barely parked the car, before he was jogging inside the loud house, following the scent of his pregnant mate.
Genevieve sat on the couch in the living room, her skin colorless and a worried look on her face. Across from her sat an elderly werewolf, her skin wrinkled but her beauty obvious. Her raven black hair was a nice contrast to her sky blue eyes and her olive skin ton.
Remy kissed Genevieve's forehead after searching for serious injuries. "What happened?"
"I had a dizzy spill and I fainted." Genevieve rubbed her belly gently, as she avoided Remy's stern eyes. "I'm fine now."
"She's not fine, alpha. That vampire child is feeding off of your mate. You need to take action." The older lady appeared pensive as she glanced between the two mates.
Remy growled at the lady, baring his fangs as she flinched back. "That vampire child is mine and you better watch your mouth around my family."
Levi had already informed the couple that their baby would feed off of Genevieve and the only way she could keep the baby was to take it really slow.
"Please, don't fight." Genevieve placed her hand on Remy's shoulder as he kneeled in front of her, blocking the old lady's view of his mate.
"Are you okay? Do I need to call Levi?" Remy asked, brushing his hand very gently over Genevieve's swollen stomach.
"Remy, I'm fine really." Genevieve placed her hands on his cold cheeks, lightly tracing the scar on his cheek. "I'm going to go upstairs though to rest a little."
"Are you sure? You know Levi wouldn't hesitate to come over." Remy helped her up and began walking her up the stairs.
"I'm sure. I just need to lay down a little." Genevieve assured her mate, while climbing into their bed.
Remy began to take off his shoes when Genevieve started chuckling. "Remy, you have a pack now and they are waiting for you in the backyard. You need to let them know what's going on. You don't have time to cuddle."
Remy frowned, yet slipped back on his shoes, knowing that Genevieve was right. He walked over to her side of the bed and kissed her lips softly. "You come first. You'll always come first."
Remy kissed Gen's baby bump, afterwards pulling the covers over his mate. "I'll get them situated and then I'll be back up here."
Genevieve bit the inside of her cheek and nodded, watching him leave the room.
Genevieve had come to the realization that she wouldn't have Remy in some sense to herself anymore. He was now the alpha of a pack and after what they had been through the last few months, they needed him more. Genevieve was a grown woman and she couldn't expect Remy's world to revolve around just her. Remy had only good intentions when he took on the position as alpha and that was something Genevieve respected. She wasn't mad that he had done it, somewhat without asking her for her input, but more worried for Remy. She was almost at the end of her pregnancy, about to have his first child and he goes and takes the position as alpha. He already felt responsible for Gen and their daughter and now he had sixty-eight other lives he would feel responsible for. She didn't want that for him.
Remy would be a great leader, no doubt ... but the timing was just off.
..
"Does anyone want the position as alpha of this pack?" Remy spoke loud, eyeing the gathered pack members as they occupied his large backyard.
The crowd was silent, their complete focus on Remy.
"I will lead the pack from here on out as Remy Monroe, -not your alpha."
Confused faces filled the crowd as they mumbled quiet words to each other.
"And what is that supposed to mean Remy Monroe ?" The old lady from before asked with a taunting smirk on her thin red lips. She stood in the forefront of the crowd, her thin arms crossed over her chest.
Remy pulled of his shirt, ignoring the lusty gazes from the female shifters and shifted himself. His limbs grew larger and dark brown hair sprouted from his skin. His eyes were now black and appeared smaller, his eight fangs glinting in the sunlight. He had grown at least half a foot taller.
Remy snatched the blood bag from the step, and ripped it open with his fangs. He sucked the bag empty within seconds, the dark red liquid dripped from his bottom lip and down his chin.
"I am the hybrid and I won't hide my true self just so I can lead this pack. Accept it or do me the favor by leaving my house." Remy licked his bloody lips, eyeing the old lady.
"Please, continue." She smirked, watching Remy with judging eyes.
"It's convenient for us to work together. You have lost your alpha and you desperately need one, especially with the only heir being a four year old pup. I need guaranteed safety for my mate Genevieve and our soon to be born vampire baby." Remy glanced at the woman towards the end.
"Once my daughter is born, I do not want to hear the word bloodsucker coming from anyone's mouth. In fact I do not want to hear anything that implies she is any different from your pups. My mate and daughter should be treated as the former alpha family. If you can manage to treat them with respect and ensure their safety, I will happily lead this pack."
The pack members whispered to those beside them, curious and confused looks on their tanned faces.
"Obviously we have questions, Remy. You can't assume we'll just follow your rules." The female shifter smiled at Remy tauntingly.
Remy bit his tongue and cracked his neck, afterwards looking at the crowd. "Stupid questions will be ignored."
"What happens when Maddox is of age?" A burly man asked as he stepped forward.
"Maddox is the rightful alpha, even at this moment." Remy winked at the young pup in the front row. "When he is of age, as well as ready to take on the pack as alpha it will be his. I don't intend to take the position away from him. I have spoken with him and he is aware that when the time comes, I will step back and let him have his alpha rank."
"What if Maddox is not ready by the age of eighteen and you give the pack to your daughter's mate?" The man pressed, although afraid to look Remy in the eye.
"My daughter has no right to the alpha position, nor will her mate. Maddox is the first and only heir to the alpha position. Nobody will have the opportunity to become alpha before Maddox."
"How do we know we can trust you, that you won't use us as food or food for your child?" A young man questioned, holding his family close.
"First off, I don't need a pack of wolves to satisfy my vampire urges. Second, you shouldn't worry where I get my blood from as long as it's not coming from your family. And lastly, I think I'm capable of providing for my child. Don't you worry." Remy raised an eyebrow, silently asking the man if his answer was satisfying.
"Are you going to change the pack name?" A young girl asked, her lips trembling as she spoke.
"You are the Shadow Steele pack and I intend to keep it that way." Remy spoke softly, mustering up a friendly smile.
"Are all questions answered?" Remy searched the crowd.
The shifters were silent, and Remy could feel the wave of contentment rolling off of them.
"I have a few questions myself." Remy took on his human features again, while slipping on his shirt. "Who is Maddox's nana?"
The woman with the taunting smile walked over to Remy, sticking out a hand for him to shake. "Lydia Steele. My son was the alpha."
Remy shook her hand, a tight smile on his face. The woman reminded him too much of his own mother. They both had those judging eyes and the smile that naturally provoked a person.
"You'll be taking care of the boy?" Remy asked, as Maddox trotted over to them.
The pup was always in wolf form, a strange habit Remy noticed in the past day.
"Of course. Us Steele's have to stick together, right Max?" She lifted the small pup into her bony arms.
Remy watched the two family members disappear into the crowd. "I don't have a pack house nor can I supply you with one at the moment. Do any of you have houses? I don't care if it's crowded at the moment, we need everyone with a roof over their head."
Remy's phone vibrated in his pocket for the second time that morning. He looked at the caller ID, -Levi. As the crowd talked between each other, Remy took the moment to answer his phone.
"Levi?" He asked, walking into his house for just an ounce of privacy.
"L-lily, ... she -"
To be continued ...
.
.
I struggled so much with the scene between Remy and the fae so I just wrote around it. *blushes embarrassed* Did you notice?
A lot of you have the suspicion that Maddox is "baby girl's" mate. But if that is true and they are already in a pack together, wouldn't that be too easy to write for the next story? Every story needs conflict.
If they are mates it won't be the "Rejected" plot because she's more vampire. A few of you had that guess overall concerning her mate but no. I don't really like the rejection plot & it's so overused. (Sorry if I offended your choice of storyline)
(2) What plot will book two have?
Should we be worried about Genevieve (dizzy spills, passing out & the baby feeding off of her) ?
What happened to Lily?
Who was expecting an engagement ring and not a baby bracelet for their daughter?
Your idea for the next chapter ?
I would be so happy if you could answer a small questioning about this book. It will contain a few questions, basically why you like this story etc. I'll post it tomorrow night. Please answer the questions as best as you can because I'll use the answers and try to bring some of that into the second book.
